A Proposed New Home For 2926

The NMSL&RHS hosted Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry and some of his staff for a tour of the AT&SF 27926 restoration project. During that vist, the need of a permanent home for the locomotive was discussed. The Society would prefer to be located near the turntable at the former Santa Fe backshops here in downtown Albuquerque. Several concepts of what might work have been generated. Two basic concepts have been studied; one of which is a round house design and while the other is a rectangular engine house plan. Either would allow repair maintenance and operations of several steam locomotives while serving as a working museum open to the public. The City and Samitaur Constructs have signed the agreement that allows work on plans for the redevelopment of the Albuquerque Railyards. The Society hopes to persuade all parties of the wisdom of honoring and saving the historical purpose of the buildings where thousands of workers labored over hundreds of steam locomotives during the early & mid-1900's.
