"Banging on a 2900"

Work Session Status Week Ending 09/07/2013

September 9, 2013

Preparations for the upcoming open house continued this week.

More piping was cleaned, painted and installed.

More sheet metal insulation covers were fabricated and are ready for paint.

Volunteers have been hard at work grinding excess weld material around the flexible staybolt sleeves in preparation for the new sleeves to be welded in place this weekend.

Parts for the engineer's outside cab bracket have been cut. Beveling the edges for welding and drilling holes in the plates to clear the flexies. The holes for the stud bolts will be done after the spacers have been welded on.

Twelve volunteers gave up four hours of their Sunday. The cab was rolled out from under its home where it was painted and new wood paneling installed. Workers hoisted it up using yellow "Big Bird". Once high enough the 2926 was backed underneath the cab. It was then lowered to the locomotive and secured with new bolts.

The exercise was well documented as several of our members were on site armed with cameras. This whole procedure will repeat itself come next year as the cab is removed again prior to fire brick work.

This Saturday is our September general membership meeting. It will be our last one prior to the open house. Please plan to attend to receive important information. We need people to come a little early to help set up chairs where the cab used to sit. You'll understand when you get there Saturday.

Hope to see everyone on site this week. We expect RAIN on Wednesday, so be prepared. And as always . . .

Keep on Steamin',
