"Banging on a 2900"

Work Session Status Week Ending 12/20/2014

December 23, 2014

Wednesday work session greeted us with a mixed bag of light rain and snow and about an hour of power outage at the beginning of the day. Workers stayed home due to slippery work surfaces on the engine. A few diehards showed up for work, most of who have shelter to work under.

Several projects were worked on including a new exhaust stack for the donated dynamo. Disassembly continued on the dynamo as one of the main bearings was removed which revealed a bad spot on the race. The number of the bearing was obtained so two new ones can be procured.

The overlay welding continued on the steam valve timing slide. The first side of the first slide was milled smooth leaving .020 of an inch of new metal.

Other workers designed and built a work platform for projects at the backhead.

The air reservoir tanks were removed from the canopy area, covered and secured for later installation.

The beat up old running boards were taken to Reliance Steel next door so new ones could be fabricated. It’s convenient to have a steel company right next door. They have donated steel to us on several occasions.

Most all of the castle nuts have either been cotter pinned or safety wired as needed. Some of the nuts are in poor condition and are being replaced. The machine shop continued their normal brake pin and bushing work.

On the other side of the site superheater fabrication continued.

As a reminder the site is closed this Wednesday the 24th for Christmas Eve. Also next Wednesday is closed for New Year’s Eve.

Gail and I would like to wish all of the 2926 volunteers, members and supporters a wonderful Christmas and look forward to seeing you Saturday, and as always . . .

Keep on Steamin',
