"Banging on a 2900"

Work Session Status Week Ending 07/25/2015

July 28, 2015

There has been a flurry of activity at the restoration site.

After examining the sand dome we discovered many areas where the metal had wasted clear through. The damage is mostly confined to the camelback piece of metal in the center area of the dome. A new part will be fabricated and installed.

The original footboards have had their pipe hangers, joiners, toe boards and hinged inspection windows removed. The old ones are being temporarily installed so the new ones can be properly laid out for the required holes.

More lubrication lines have been installed and new lubricant is running through them.

We are still removing broken stud bolts. The old holes are being re-tapped and custom made bolts installed.

Metal brackets are being fabricated for the anticipated second or back-up dynamo.

Some of the hand rails have been reinstalled.

Engineer's side trailing truck brake levers are being removed and new bushings are being installed.

Many more parts and pipes are being thoroughly cleaned and painted; seemingly a never-ending job.

Planning for the electrical wiring system is ongoing. Workers are preparing material lists for wire and miscellaneous parts.

At the last writing the 29 new flexible staybolts had been installed. The past work sessions installed the threaded "K" nuts and adjusted as necessary. The sealing caps for those sleeves were also installed and torqued.

Hope to see everyone at the site this week, and as always . . .
