WORK STATUS
"Banging on a 2900"
Work Session Status Week Ending 04/06/2013
4/8/13
Draining the #3 and 4 driver bearing oil continues followed by flushing. A fresh load of lubricant will
complete the task.
The bogie tie rod on our car mover was modified to clear the locomotive's pilot. It was cut in half and
a bent pipe inserted to form a "V" then welded together. A gusset was fabricated and welded to the tie rod.
Prep work continues on the cab wood lining prior to painting.
The cylinder exhaust piping on the engineer's side is nearing completion. More welding on the saddle tee is
yet to be done. The crossover piece to the fireman's side will be the next piece to be fabricated.
Wasted flexi bolt sleeve removal is on-going. Both hand grinding removal and the use of a mechanical device
utilitzing the mag drill has been productive.
More painting was done Wednesday and Saturday. Various pipes, parts and frame areas are being renewed with
the black paint.
Several pieces of sheetmetal were cut and drilled for bolts. Those pieces secure insulation in and around
the forward boiler support.
The bell ringer device was installed with it's associated piping.
A few announcements are in order.
- The April General Membership meeting is this Saturday at 9:00 am. Dr. Mike will discuss this year's BoD
election topics.
- My Neighborhood Association requested ideas to beautify a wall via murals to be painted on the wall
depicting Albuquerque's history. Gayle Van Horn and I discussed the possiblity of his painting of the
2926 arriving at the Alvarado Hotel being part of this endeavor. Gayle agreed to submit his artwork and
it was accepted. The committee is requesting paint donations to help with the expense. If any of you
have any useable left over paint supplies please bring them to the site this week and next.
- I've attached a flyer for the
"Rails Along the Rio Grande" model train show on May 7th and 8th. Visit
their website to view all the specifics about where and when exactly this will take place. Volunteers
are needed to man our table there and our store at our 2926 site that Saturday the 8th. Let us know if
you are willing to help us out for both days. We won't open our store on site for the Friday session,
only the Saturday session. Our store items will be available at the train show, but also they will send
people over to our site to view 2926 and we need to have people at our store on site.
- We plan to raffle off Dora Spargo's quilt during the September Open House. We also have a BNSF
blanket/throw we'll also raffle off. We need volunteer(s) to help coordinate this raffle. You don't
have to be one of the weekly volunteers, it could be the wife/significant other of a volunteer. If you
are good at helping us out with this important task, please come forward and let us know! We need to get
these items sold.
- On a sad note, Steve B's wife, Mary, lost her hard-fought battle with breast cancer. She passed away
this morning at 4:00 am. Steve informs me her service will be this Friday at 4:00 pm. Watch your emails
for confirmation on the location. He says once he has had time to decompress from all that has transpired
these last several months he will rejoin his fellow 2926ers. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and
his family.
Hope to see you all on site this week and as always . . .
Keep on Steamin',
Rick Kirby, CMO
