"Banging on a 2900"

Work Session Status Week Ending 03/31/2018

April 2, 2018

Hello all,

Many of the projects reported last time are still ongoing as we prepare for the boiler steam test.

The jacketing gang has plenty of work still ahead as pipes templates are made from rusted and wasted original parts. Our metal fabrication shops stay busy working off the templates. After being checked and/or adjusted for proper fit they are sent to the paint shop.

We have been testing some of the many systems, one of which was the stack lifter. It was in need of some adjusting and often a few tweaks and lubrication so it now functions properly.

Our brass forge crew have successfully poured the brass bearing surfaces for the radial buffer plate. A great and long awaited day that was! Congrats to our crew for their perseverance and ingenuity.

Small bore control piping continues as all the pipes have been installed from the cab to the front of the engine. Cab piping also is being reinstalled; tight bends in cramped spaces.

Fabrication has begun for a custom fold-up jump seat behind the engineer. Parts are being cut and bolt holes drilled.

Electrical work is progressing as various control boxes and conduit have been installed.

Various steam pipes are being insulated and sealed.

Our in house artist, Gayle VanHorn, has already finished the painting for this year's Christmas cards. It will also be included in the planned calendar for 2019.

As a reminder, summer hours begin this Wednesday, April 4th, 7:30 am. Visitor hours is always 9-2.

Don't forget about our tool car. We still need some donations to meet our goal on our web site on GoFundMe.

Weather is shaping up nicely this week, and as always . . .

Keep on Steamin',
Rick Kirby, CMO
