After taking two weeks off for R & R Gail and I returned to the restoration site this past Wednesday. Thanks to Bob D. for filling in during my absence as assistant CMO.
Work continues on the flexible staybolt sleeves both removing wasted ones and welding on new ones. We are currently removing the larger size located up around the crown. The larger sleeves were designed to be longer than the small ones so they can be customized to fit the curve of the firebox. Ron T. designed a jig to fit in the lathe. It is adjustable to whatever angle the large sleeves have been cut enabling the weld area to be beveled in a matter of minutes. Thread chasing of reusable sleeves continues on the underside of the boiler.
Final assembly of the trailing truck air brake cylinders continues. Two of them have been installed on the engineer's side.
More crud is being removed from the frame area under the cab. Workers continually uncover discarded rusty treasurers encased in a hard oil/sand goop. Old pipe fittings, bolts and nuts are most common.
Work has begun organizing the myriad of electrical conduits, boxes and switch gear located in the cab. Many pieces have already been cleaned and prepped for paint.
Saturday Dr. Mike and Jon held a New Member orientation inducting six more volunteers. Welcome aboard all of you.
November the 2nd has been chosen to present refresher classes on confined space work and rescue. This will not be repeated anytime soon so please plan to attend. Instruction will begin at 9:00am.
