"Banging on a 2900"

Work Session Status Week Ending 09/20/2014

September 22, 2014

Hello all,

Gail and I returned to the restoration site last week after two weeks of R & R. Thanks to Bob D. and Dave V. for filling in during my absence and Frank G. in Gail's absence for the Minutes.

Good progress was achieved on both crosshead assemblies. The engineer's side was completed which made way for the two remaining side rods to be installed. The fireman's side crosshead assembly was also installed.

A considerable amount of frame and boiler painting was done in preparation for Saturday's open house.

Flexible staybolt sleeve welding continued. Some 27 sleeves remain to be welded. That work will resume after the open house.

The machine shop was turning out replacement brake arm pins. Matching bushings are also slated for fabrication.

This past Wednesday we were greeted with a light drizzling rain most all day, compliments of the remnants of Hurricane Odile. About a dozen diehard volunteers showed up and began area clean-up for the open house. More preparations were completed Saturday along with a few more sleeves being welded on.

One of the lathes has suffered a breakdown. Parts were ordered and installed. It awaits a fresh fill of oil.

Remaining open house preparations will resume this Wednesday. We need all area volunteers to participate to complete the tasks at hand.

This Saturday the 27th our starting time will be 7:00 am, so final set-up can be done. The usual breakfast burritos will be available.

Hope to see you at the site soon, and as usual . . .

Keep on Steamin',
Rick Kirby, CMO
